Take a look at the detailed markings of the feathers on this unusual bird, especially the tail. At first glance, folks might think this specimen of the avian family ugly and awkward. But look closer. The almost herringbone pattern on the tail reminds me of a pair of dress slacks; and draped over the body, the feathers form a cape-like covering. The anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) could pass for a bird version of an eighteenth-century gentleman dressed for an evening at the theater. All he needs is a top hat. Often referred to as the snake bird because of the way it slithers through the water with only its long, black neck visible, the anhinga conjures up an aura of intrigue.
