In the 1950s (late 1950s) I was riding my bike down Harrison Street on my way to the grocery store for the first time. I wanted to surprise my dad and bring him a present. The little old man who owned the grocery store was so shocked over a 6 year old asking for a six-pack of beer, he actually put one in a brown bag and added it to my parents’ bill. Was my dad surprise? Oh yeah!
Today I’m blogging on Tina Glasneck’s site about my Sydney Lockhart mysteries, which are set in the 1950s. Stop by if you have a chance and tell me what your favorite decade is.
I had a little corner store within a bike ride of the house like that. My mother would write a note and give me some money and send me to buy a loaf of bread and a pound of baloney. If I had any change I could buy a candy bar for a nickel.
That was in the early 60's. My favorite decade–the decade of my childhood.
But it might as well have been two decades because the early part was strikingly like the 50s, while the later part was full of war protests, hippies, psychedelic music and campus unrest–the Kent State shootings. My parents threatened to keep me from going to college as they watched in horror as that debacle unfolded.
So much packed into that key crazy decade of the 1960's, the time when I grew up.
Thanks for bringing me down memory lane, Kathy!
Love the concept of your 50's set series!

Thanks, Stephanie. I remember watching all the protests on TV and praying everything would be cleared up by the time I left for college.
